Halicarnassei Historiarum Libri IX by Herodotus, Published by Oxford University Press, 1824. These are volumes I through IV of the Oxford University Press 1824 publication of Herodotus' nine book treatment of Halicarnussus, in the original Greek, with annotations and variorum in Latin, by Thomas Gaisford, Oxford's then Regius Professor of Greek, curator of the Bodleian Library, principal delegate of the Oxford University Press and Dean of Christ Church. This set was the property of Sir John Mordaunt, Baronet, of Walton, Warwickshire, whose bookplate (the only attachment) is on each front inside cover. This was most likely the 9th Baronet, given the timing.

The covers (app. 8.5" x 5.5") are full calf, with gilt decoration and lettering. The spines, straight and with five raised bands, have several chipped spots, but all the lettering is bright and legible. There is surface wear to the spine edges, but all covers are attached. Some outside corners and spine ends have shallow wear, but there are no notable tears. The end pages are foxed, and there is recurrent foxing in each volume. Most pages are not foxed. None of the text is faded or obscured. The bindings are secure, with no loose or missing pages. The first two volumes (1114 [583] pages, plus index) have the full nine book greek text, with extensive latin annotations. There is occasional pencil marginalia, though most pages have no written-in notes. Volumes III and IV (1138 [565] pages, plus index) are an extensive text analysis, in latin, with excerpts from the original greek text. I've found no pencil notes to these volumes, but there may be some. There are no page tears or notable creases. The marbled page edges are unfaded and clean.
