Item Details
Description
Flintlock pistol with Queen Anne era as well as Georgian Era characteristics. Typical fishtail shape with grotesque butt cap, inlayed wire scrollwork on stock and mixed metal decorative furniture on wood stock that extends to end of fixed smooth bore barrel. Trigger guard has rear and forward finials and engraved scroll work on guard. Left side plate shows two dogs chasing a fox, right side plate has what appears to be a crest or standard of owner. Butt cap has medium tangs with grotesque face of an angry bearded male, silver wash over brass, wear to high points. Fizzle and fizzle spring move freely, Hammer has loss from top of ‘ S’ curve forward, no flint clip. Wire inlay on stock has become partially loose. Ram rod is of tapered wood with metal cap on broad end. Small loss to stock wood on underside of butt cap 7/8th in X ¼ in. 13 ¼ in ram rod14 in x ½ diameter barrel 21 in total length x 2 in x 2 ¾ in butt end.Provenance:From a collection of John Rote (1928-2017)Mr. Rote was born in the Netherlands.Attended and graduated from Oxford.Fought in the Dutch Underground during World War II Participant of the 1956 Olympics – Field HockeyJohn Rote, Chairman of The Privateers between 1957 and 1963. The Privateers were the United States field hockey team that competed with international teams, such as Bermuda, England, and Jamaica. The organization originated with the 1956 Olympic team and served to develop the sport worldwide. The Privateers hosted the International Field Hockey Festival each fall in Greenwich, Connecticut. Senator Prescott Bush (father of George H. W.
