Description
Cup (goblet) of Elijah the Prophet. [Germany, 18th Century].
Silver (marked; blurred marks), repouss? and engraved; partly gilt.
Cylindrical cup that gradually broadens toward the rim. Decorated with large cartouches incorporating animal imagery: two birds, a lion with its tongue extended and holding a column with a flag, a deer, and a dog chasing a rabbit. Near the rim is the Hebrew inscription "This is the cup of Elijah, may his memory be a boon" (the inscription may have been added at a later stage).
The motif of a dog chasing a rabbit appears in a number of illustrated manuscripts of Passover haggadot, apparently originating in the Hebrew acronym Ya.Ki.N.Ha.Z. (Yain, Kidush, Ner, Havdalah, Zman), which represents the order of Havdalah blessings customary on a holiday evening that falls on Saturday night. The acronym "Yakinhaz" is similar in sound to the German words "jagen hase", meaning "rabbit chase".
Base diameter: 7 cm, rim diameter: 9 cm, height: 10.5 cm.
