Massachusetts. Circa 1810. Aaron Willard (1783-1864). The well-patinated painted circular dial with Roman numerals, inscribed Aaron Willard, beneath a glazed door with brass bezel, surmounted by a brass eagle, the body with a trapezoidal eglomise panel with gilt, red and blue scrolls on a white ground above a displayed eagle atop a red, white and blue shield and double banner inscribed “Willard’s Patent”, within a giltwood rope-twist surround flanked by a pair of pierced brass concave mounts, the lower eglomise panel with conforming surround depicting the defeat of the British Warships HMS Cyane and HMS Levant in 1815 by the USS Constitution during the War of 1812, with an eagle atop a patriotic shield and titled in gold on a red banner “CAPTURE OF THE CAYNE AND LEVANT”, the scene flanked by gilt torches, above crossed cannons and American Flags. The offered Federal Banjo Clock has descended down through successive generations of the same family. Height 30”. Width 10”.
