Item Details
Description
This volume is entitled "Hollands Heyll' en Rampen ofte Desselfs Gelukk en ongelukken, tegens malkanderend vertoond, in twee deelen waar van het eerste deel vervat" by Dionisius du Toict (Amsterdam: By Jan t'en Hoorn, 1686). Bound in full vellum, and with faded lettering to the spine, this volume is adorned with an engraved frontispiece by Romeyn de Hooghe, an important and prolific late Dutch Baroque, painter, sculptor, engraver and caricaturist (Wikipedia).

The text features decorative engraved headpieces, tailpieces, and initials throughout. This work concerns the history of Holland, its fortunes and misfortunes ("disasters," translated literally), divided into two parts. Du Toict relates the history of the old Dutch government in this volume, with the rise of towns and factions, which in Holland were more important than central governments. The work also comments on the disastrous impact of conflicts between the churches. The book is dedicated to his majesty Wilhelm Henrik, Prince of Orange, Katzenellenbogen.

Condition
Soiling is present to the vellum covers and spine of this volume, as well as scattered spots of moisture. The lettering on the spine is faded. The front hinge of the volume displays internal strain. The outer edge of the text block is toned. The paste-downs display edge wear and tearing, with the rear paste-down beginning to separate from the board. Minor edgewear also appears on the frontispiece, which shows a signature in ink in the bottom margin. Moisture markings appear in the interior and at the front and rear of the volume, and the pages are slightly rippled. Occasional tiny spots of soiling are visible to the pages.
