A Very fine 20th C. Chinese porcelain trinket box. Of a flattened round body, raised on a low footed ring base. Top panel exterior intrigue polychrome hand painting depicted winter waterside and mountainous landscape scene. The sides with cobalt-blue underglaze geometrical pendants ribbons.


Mark on base, a iron-red seal mark.

Dimension: 1-1/2" H x 4" Diam. The character for a small box sounds the same as ? hé which can mean ‘peace; harmony’ and so a box portrayed in a picture symbolizes peaceful wishes. This wish is amplified by the presence of lotus leaves and a scepter. Hé-hé èr Xian ???? - the Heavenly twins of ‘Harmony and Union’ are shown as two boys one carrying a box (or sometimes a bowl) and the other a lotus.
