Wang Yeting (1884-1942) was a renowned contemporary ceramic painter hailing from Leping County, Jiangxi Province. He was one of the eight master ceramists who were formally employed by the Jingdezhen imperial kiln. Yeting, who excelled at painting flowers, birds, and landscapes, had a far-reaching influence. He introduced an innovative technique of porcelain painting by using oil and gouache to create unique works of art. This set of four famille rose plaques captures four individualized landscapes with towering mountains shrouded by misty clouds fading off in the distance and murmuring rivers diverted by shores occupied with houses and flora. In the foreground, there is a lush grove with travelers relaxing near a pavilion. In another, fisherman glides in his boat down the middle of the serene river. Emerald green is the base color of these paintings, complemented by the application of tender green and ochre, in an organic fashion. The mountains and rivers are depicted in grand fashion, using staggered brush strokes; a contrast with the meticulously illustrated figures and architecture, effectively creating a calm, yet focused, aura.
