Description
Rare Salesman's Sample Stoneware Cream Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, probably J. Dipple, Lewistown, PA, late 19th century, ovoid jar with semi-squared rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a large tulip extending from a leafy stem. Impressed with a cobalt-highlighted number "5" at the shoulder, indicating the jar was probably made as a miniature sample of Dipple's five-gallon-size product. Miniature stoneware from Central Pennsylvania is considered very unusual. Provenance: Dr. Raymond L. Owen Collection. Small base chip. H 2 3/4".
