Description
Alexander Scammell (1747-1781) General. Scammell was wounded at Saratoga in 1778. He was subsequently appointed adjutant general and became a member of Washington’s military inner circle. He commanded a regiment of light infantry at the siege of Yorktown in 1781 and was captured by Hessian dragoons and was wounded after his surrender and subsequently died on October 6 in Williamsburg. 8” x 13 ½” document signed “Alexdr Scammell Adj. Gen’”, no date nor place. The document is a certification of the “Return of the present Strength of the Massachusetts Regiments together with the number of Recruits joined to each….” Listed are eleven regiments, their present strength, recruits joining and total size. There is one small age spot, otherwise very good.
