U.S. Gen. David Hunter Signed War-Dated Military Order, 1861
1p of lined paper, measuring 7.625" x 9.5", Chicago, Illinois, dated September 11, 1861. Signed "D: Hunter" as Major General of Volunteers. A war-dated document, ordering his staff to report to duty with him in St. Louis. With flattened folds, an area of staining, and a bold signature. Very good. Reading in full:
"The following named gentlemen, numbers of my Staff having reported to me for duty in this city, will accompany me forthwith to St. Louis Missouri - Captain I.W. Turner Commissary of Subsistence, Captain I. Wilson Shaffer Quartermaster, Lieut. S.W. Stockton 4" Cavalry, [Lieut.] E.W. Smith 15" Infantry, Surgeon I.K. Burnes Medical Staff." Accompanied by a Certificate of Authentication from Dana Linett, President of Early American History Auctions, Inc.
Union General David Hunter (1802-1866) gained fame for his organization of the First African American Regiment and an unauthorized 1862 order (immediately rescinded) emancipating slaves in three Southern states. After the war, Hunter served as president of the military commission which tried the conspirators involved in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.
