Description
Kuba cups were used by high court members as status pieces while drinking palm wine. From the Cleynhens Collection: Jules Cleynhens began collecting this Congo and Gabon art in the 1950s. His daughter Greta Cleynhens and her husband William Du Bois continued collecting artifacts from the same region after Jules’s death. Jules was an administrator at a prison in Bulul, which is 17 kms from Likasi in, what was then, the Belgian Congo. The 1950s were a brutal time for the Congo under the Belgians. Jules ran a craft center inside the prison, which allowed the prisoners to produce works of art like pottery, wood bowls and oil paintings. Many of these pieces are still in Greta’s collection in South Africa but they are not available for sale. Greta was born, and grew up, in Katanga, Congo where she also met her husband William. William, who was also exposed to the rich Congo artifacts and collected many works. They left the Congo in 1962. H:12" x W:4" x D:4"
