Description
French, 20th century. French Legion of Honour (also known as National Order of the Legion of Honor) of standard form for Officier (officer) rank ith red grosgrain ribbon with circular rosette to be worn on left breast, above green enameled laurel and oak wreath above a white enameled five-armed Maltese Asterisk or cross; center with head of Marianne in a cobalt blue ring with "REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE 1870"; obverse with crossed French flags in red, white and blue enamel with cobalt border reading "HONNEUR ET PATRIE" (roughly translated to Honor and Fatherland). Overall approximate height 4.5", width (of ribbon) 1.6", diameter of enameled order 1.6". Provenance: Property from the Estate of Mr. Eskild Bondesen of Copenhagen, Denmark.
Condition
General wear to ribbon including fading and some fraying; commensurate with age and material. Minor losses and small fractures to white enameled surfaced. Slight pooling to blue enameled surface to side with crossed flags.
