Description
IVAN FEDOROVICH CHOULTSE(Russian Federation 1874-1939)
Expansive Mediterranean Seascape - probably Capri or Sorrento
Oil on canvas
Signed lower right "Iw. F. Choultse"
21.5 inches x 25.75 inches (55 x 65.5 cm), contained in its likely original gilt oak frame
Provenance:
Private collection, Orlando, Florida, U.S.A.
Today Ivan Choultse is mostly known as a landscape painter who created appealing paintings which, like the offered lot, successfully blend the contrast of dark shadows and light. He was born in Petrograd, Russia in 1877 and studied painting with Constantin Krighitsky eventually becoming a court painter to Czar Nicholas II. After the Russian Revolution, like many other Russian painters, he immigrated to Paris, and in 1923 began exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français. While in France Choultse continued to paint Russian scenes although he also made several trips to Italy so as to paint Mediterranean vistas.
