NORTHERN or EASTERN EUROPEAN SCHOOL, Circa 2nd Quarter 20th Century: Alpine Village landscape with Church and Figures, oil/canvas, European stretchers measure 23 7/8 x 27 3/4 inches (37 3/4 x 34 1/8 x 3 inches overall framed dimensions), signed distinctively but somewhat illegibly perhaps MG Pollm?? or MZ Pollm?? or perhaps written in cyrillic lower right (see detail images), old pencil inscription on back of frame possibly: Griessan' (??) / S. (??) (or perhaps) & (??) / Garmish (??) (see detail images). Original or approximately period very heavy gessoed wooden frame (repatinated/painted and painted with gilt/goldtone highlights).

In as discovered in Florida Gulf Coast sale of estate items condition. No holes/patches. Not lined. Rear of canvas & European stretchers dark & heavily patinated, appearing early 20th Cen. Frame from rear also appears well before WWII however scoop neckline & skirt height of women may place date of work within decade or two - perhaps 1930's? Frame front repatinated, gessoed & gilded circa 1950's. Entire surface of painting incredibly rich golden amber - reminds us of Ivan Choultse painting we sold years ago or could be that either due to a preserving layer of very heavy nicotine or mid-century varnish that bloomed to gold that painting actually in blues & greens but appears before cleaning as golden orange amber - we just don't know (not a heavy smoker's smell however & probably autumn hues under varnish). Just a little very fine craquelure in sky. Frame paint residue on painting edge. Frame cracked, craqueled, poorly gilded w/ couple pieces missing. Fabulous impastoed details to oil.
