Bust of General Philip Schuyler (1733-1804), circa 1800, unsigned, carved marble on with a 6" marble socle, 21 in. (bust only),. Notes: General Philip John Schuyler was appointed as one of the four generals under George Washington just prior to the Revolutionary War in 1775. He was perhaps most noted for the loss of Ticonderoga on in July 5, 1777, a former French fortress taken by Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys and a key position against the forming British army in Canada. His name was cleared after a court martial and he resigned his commission as a general. He continued to serve in the Continental Army and later as a senator from New York.. Provenance: N/A
