Description
(American School). California Mountain Landscape, Nineteenth Century. Oil on canvas, (32 x 24 inches), indistinct artist's signature on the stretcher, and also inscribed "Grant Mountain, California;" housed in the original gilt gesso and wood frame. Frame: H: 40 in., W: 31.125 in., D: 3.125 in. Possibly depicting a view of mountains from Camp Grant. The area was originally settled by Northern Sinkyone people. In 1863 a United States Civil War camp was established by Captain John P. Simpson and Company E of the 1st California Volunteer Battalion of Mountaineers. Located near Dyerville, Humboldt County, California, it was named Camp Grant after Ulysses S. Grant, who was posted at Fort Humboldt in 1854. The camp was abandoned in 1865. Later it became a logging and railroad support settlement for the construction of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad.
