1937 Dated "Albert Schweitzer" Autograph Letter Signed
ALBERT SCHWEITZER (1875-1965). French Physician, Philosopher, Missionary and Musician.
January 17, 1937-Dated, Autograph Letter Signed,"Albert Schweitzer," in French, 1 page, measuring 8.25" x 5", Oblong Octavo, Choice Extremely Fine. Albert Schweitzer, in Paris to receive treatment for his toothaches, hopes he can dine with a close friend before departing the city for his return to Africa. Written to his close friend Mr. Daniel Halevy, Schweitzer hand pens, in full:

"Dear Mr. Halevy, -- If you are in Paris Friday evening we can dine together. I am free at 8 P.M. and my train leaves at 10. Please, if we can have dinner together, let me know at the Hotel Malherbe, 19 rue de Vaugirard, where I will be between 4 and 8 P.M., and if you can, pick me up at 8. -- Hurriedly, your devoted -- (Signed) Albert Schweitzer. -- If you can't, don't bother to let me know. I will leave the hotel at 8 P.M."
Schweitzer was a French Protestant clergyman, philosopher, physician, medical missionary and music scholar. An authority on Johann Sebastian Bach and a world-famous organist, Schweitzer abandoned his theological training and studied medicine.

As a missionary physician, Schweitzer founded the African Leper Hospital at Lambar,n, in French Equatorial Africa (now Gabon) (1 913). He was the author of Kant's Philosophy of Religion (1899), The Mysticism of the Apostle Paul (1930) and On the Edge of the Primeval Forest (1922). He also wrote a monograph on John Sebastian Bach. Received the Nobel Peace Prize (1952) and the Order of Merit (1955).
