John Dolben, Archbishop of York, Autograph Letter Signed, Recommendation
1p of a bifolium, measuring 6.75" x 9", [York], dated November 14, 1683. Signed "Joh. Ebor:" and addressed to Bishop Thorp via Henry Thynn at the Lord Keeper's House. Dolben writes to Thorp a letter of recommendation. In part: "There is a small living in York, St. Cuthberts like to be void shortly by Death. I am desir'd by an excellent Good man living in the Parish…to recommend to my Ld Keepers favor a Master of Arts Subchantor of the Cathedral Mr. George Hallsey…" The letter has been mounted at the left edge to an archival folder, measuring 10.75" x 15" overall; it could easily be removed if desired. It has flattened mail folds, with toning and soiling at the folds. Additional soiling on verso. A hole due to the wax seal being broken has been repaired with archival material. Boldly signed by Dolben.
John Dolben (1625–1686) was an English priest and Church of England bishop and archbishop. He graduated from Christ Church and the University of Oxford and became canon of Christ Church during the Restoration. He was made Archbishop of York in 1683.
