Original Oil Painting 101 Prints In 1967 Norman R. Eppink released a limited edition book of 101 original prints illustrating the graphics media found in major exhibitions or collections, including text explaining each process. Only 15 sets were created; these were distributed to a select group of institutions in the United States and England, including the National Gallery of Art (Washington, D.C.), The Library of Congress (Washington, D.C.), The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, New York), and the British Museum (London, England). The purpose of this book was to provide students of the graphic arts with a single reference for all processes and technical variations, providing print examples that could be handled and examined closely in partnership with the accompanying text. In 1972 101 Prints became available in hardcover and paperback editions from the University of Oklahoma Press. Norman R. Eppink: Norman Roland Eppink was born in Cleveland, Ohio, July 29, 1906, to Herman and Catherine Koch Eppink. He graduated from the Cleveland Art Institute and Western Reserve University (Ohio), and taught in Cleveland and Lakewood, Colorado. He taught at Emporia State University from 1939-1975, becoming head of the Art Department in 1947. Norman was the Emporia Gazette’s “Man of the Week” twice, on June 1, 1957 and October 21, 1967. The latter honor was due to the issuing of 101 Prints, a limited edition book illustrating the graphics media found in major exhibitions or collections and including explanatory text. He had worked for five years researching and creating the book by hand; however, his original idea had existed in notes for 28 years. “Eppink: Retrospective,” an exhibit displaying more than 60 years of his artwork, was held on campus in April, 1972. Norman was a member of the Rotary Club and also served as a member of the Kansas Cultural Arts Commission. In 1981 the Norman R. Eppink Art Gallery was established in King Hall on the Emporia State University campus. Norman R. Eppink died June 14, 1985. Norman married Helen Brenan on June 15, 1931; they had one daughter and two granddaughters. Helen was born in Springfield, Ohio, to Bayard Richards and Grace Hewitt Brenan on August 19, 1910. She was also an artist and attended the John Huntington Polytech Institute (Ohio) and the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. Helen taught art at Ottawa University, K.S.T.C., and the College of Emporia, serving as the head of the College of Emporia’s Art Department from 1961-1974. She was the Emporia Gazette’s “Woman of the Week” March 22, 1969. Her paintings are in the permanent collections of the Kansas Federation of Women’s Clubs, the Wichita Art Museum, Kansas State University, and the Emporia Women’s City Club, where she also served as a member of the art committee. Other memberships included the Quest Club, Junto, Kansas Federation of Artists, and the Kansas State Art Teachers Association. Norman dedicated 101 Prints to his wife. Helen Brenan Eppink passed away March 14, 1986
