Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Two adorable terracotta animals from this shaft tomb culture. First, a dog standing on all fours, his head with a long snout, pointy ears, a smiling mouth, and a perky tail - his body adorned with a red and white negative resist finish. Completing the pair, an unusual, perhaps hybrid redware creature, presenting a turtle body and the head of a rooster. Both show liberal manganese deposits. Size: dog measures 6.625" L x 4" H (16.8 cm x 10.2 cm); hybrid critter measures 5.755" L x 3.875" H (14.6 cm x 9.8 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Harvey Collection, acquired prior to 1972
