Description
Southern Italy, Apulia, Gnathian Teano Ware, ca. 360 to 320 BCE. This is a beautiful kylix, a drinking cup, with two raised handles extending from near the rim and a pronounced foot. The black background has attained a near iridescence from the firing process. Painted around the lower body, below a decorative register of red and pale yellow, is a motif of repeated grape clusters and vines - suggesting the wine that would be drunk from it. Size: 5.85" L x 4" W x 3.35" H (14.9 cm x 10.2 cm x 8.5 cm)
Apulian vase painters created this style, Gnathian ware, where the entire vessel was glazed black, then painted with red, creamy white, and/or orange/yellow pigments. This was perfected in the town of Gnathia (present-day Egnazia), on the Adriatic coast in Apulia. The black glaze was probably intended to look like bronze.
Provenance: Ex- Collection of James Farmer, Maryland, collected from major galleries and auction houses between 1995 and 2005
