Description
Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Apulian, ca. 4th century BCE. A lovely two-part vessel used to store soaps and scented perfumes for the bath, decorated with twin Lady of Fashion portraits separated by palmettes and tendrils, a four-petaled flower behind the head of one lady, the knobbed lid decorated with rays, sinuous lines and dots surrounded by a fretted band that matches the band around the base of the lid - all skillfully executed via the red-figure technique. Size: 4.125" in diameter x 3.875" H (10.5 cm x 9.8 cm)
Provenance: Ex- Collection of James Farmer, Maryland, collected from major galleries and auction houses between 1995 and 2005
