Description
Portrait of Woman with gold necklace, oil on canvas, circa 1835, unsigned, as is typical. The lovely unidentified raven haired subject is depicted in black, with blossomed sleeves, lace collar, gold and obsidian jewelry with what is probably a portrait locket. She is seated on a red sofa, with a red swag drape revealing a landscape, possibly New London viewed from Groton across the Thames River. In a vintage deep cove gold molded frame. OS: 35- 1/2" x 30- 1/2", SS: 29- 1/2" x 24- 1/2", cleaned and relined, fine overall craquelure. Born in Guilford, Connecticut, little is known about Isaac Sheffield except that he was an itinerant Connecticut painter who worked in the 1830s and early 1840s. He often worked in New London, which was quite a wealthy town, being the second largest whaling port on the east coast.
