Description
GERMANY, 1863-1945
A watercolor and tempera industrial painting by Heinrich Kley. Titled "Interior of a Steel Mill", the work is one of the finest examples of Kley's Industrial Art. The painting exhibits early influences of mythological creatures as seen in his later pen and ink drawings. Satyrs are seen patrolling a canal as two male figures smelt metal in the middle ground. Smoke fills the air as bats swarm from the background. Kley effectively illuminates the scene with flames from smelting metal enhancing a sense of despair. The painting is signed in the lower left corner.
Provenance: Illustrated in Grooper Art Gallery Catalog, Fall, 1975 No. 31. Purchased from Grooper Art Gallery, December, 11th, 1982. This watercolor was exhibited by The Drawing Society at the Hirschl & Adler Galleries, New York, February 12th to March 8th, 1986, the exhibition being of Master Drawings from The Drawing Society’s Membership. Illustrated in the Society’s catalog of the exhibition.
