Description
Manufactured 1870 to 1873 with 11,533 made. These were built using surplus 1861 Springfield parts. Barrel and framed are numbered 31968. Barrel is finished in the white. Has folding ladder Civil War-type rear sight. Block is stamped "1870 U.S." with eagle. Lockplate is dated 1863 and stamped "U.S. Springfield" with eagle. Two barrel bands stamped "U" with sling swivel on forward band. Steel cleaning rod. Stock comb is unit stamped "26". Wrist is stamped "A 43". "E.S.A." cartouche in oval on left side. Barrel is clean with some age freckling. Lock is brown patina. Trigger guard and buttplate are brown patina. Very good wood. Numerous war dings with some chipping on right side near tip. Fine action.
