Description
This appears to be a Confederate Veterans uniform owned by a Virginia member made in the 1870's or 80's. It is a double breasted frock coat of cadet grey wool bearing seven button holes on each breast. Seven corresponding buttons on left breast, two remaining on right breast and three small buttons near under seam on each cuff. Buttons bear the Virginia state seal and are backmarked, "C. WENDLINGER/RICHMOND VA." Large buttons are Albert type VA 20, 23mm. Small buttons are Albert type VA 20Av, 15mm. These buttons are generally accepted to be post war, manufactured during the 1870-80's. Body lining of twilled, glazed cotton with machine applied padding stitches on upper breast and demonstrating a good amount of resewing along seams and linings. Lining torn away at top central back portion just below collar. No collar lining present. Corded button holes are hand worked in black but now faded brown. Top stitching to cuffs are by machine. Lining originally machine applied. Coat exterior in very good condition. Lining as noted.
