Description
Pair of Moths. Attributed to Herman Henstenburgh, (Hoorn 1667 - 1726). Gouache and gum arabic on vellum. 6 x 7 3/4 inches visible, 10 1/2 x 12 inches framed. Henstenburgh made many sheets of studies of insects, very similar to these (Lots 63 - 65) in conception and mise-en-page. Typically, those drawings do not, however, have black backgrounds, although the artist did use black or very dark backgrounds in one or two of his more elaborate still-life compositions (such as the example formerly in the Van Leeuwen Collection, sold, Amsterdam, Christie’s, 24 November 1992, lot 102).
