Description
Winterhalder & Hofmeier (German, 1810-1925) after Joseph Knibb (English, 1640-1711), late 119th/early 20th century. A very fine reproduction brass lantern timepiece clock having a "Lothbury" frame with column turned corner posts beneath engraved foliate scroll pierced dolphin pattern frets to the front and sides centered by vasiform turned finials and domed bell bearer above incorporating decorative pierced lobes and issuing a further central finial above, the circular 6" dial signed "Jos. Knibb, Londini Fecit" towards the upper margin of the dial center and with engraved stylized flowering tulip scrolling infill beneath and Roman chapter ring with stylized fleur-de-lis half hour markers and finely worked steel hands. The whole raised on turned ball feet. Approximate height 15". Provenance: Property from the Estate of Mr. John L. Roper II, Former Owner and CEO of NORSHIPCO (Norfolk Shipbuilding and Drydock Corporation), of Norfolk, Virginia. Mr. Roper collected a number of fine American antiques and art including a noteworthy early American coin collection that sold at auction in 2014.
