Description
German,17th to 18th century.Horizontal striking table or desk clock of hexagonal form with white enameled circular dial with hand painted black Roman numerals and Arabic numbers and applied ring, two scrolled gilt brass hands engraved gilt brass metal body with six shaped side windows on hexagonal socle base surmounting six stylized lion's paw and ball feet, underside with bell for chiming. Apparently unmarked. Accompanied with winding key. Overall approximate height 3.4", width 4.3", depth 5". Provenance: Property from the Estate of Mr. John L. Roper II, Former Owner and CEO of NORSHIPCO (Norfolk Shipbuilding and Drydock Corporation), of Norfolk, Virginia. Mr. Roper collected a number of fine American antiques and art including a noteworthy early American coin collection that sold at auction in 2014.
Condition
Verge fusee movement. Strike works but is fast due to a missing speed regulator. Alarm works. Dial exhibits hairline fractures; most stable. There is small loss to dial under "30" and between "15" and "20" markers. Some screws replaced. Oxidation and some polish residue in crevices.
