Ernst Fuchs (1930-2015)
At an early age, Ernst Fuchs took private lessons in painting and sculpting. He began his studies at the age of 15 at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under the guidance of Albert Paris von Gütersloh. Between 1950 and 1962, Fuchs travelled a lot and exhibited his works in various countries, until he returned to Vienna. He became one of the main exponents of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism, whose founder was his teacher, Albert Paris von Gütersloh. Even though the movement was inspired by Surrealism, the Fantastic Realists were especially interested in the technical perfection of Old Masters, and their works appeared less abstract than surrealist paintings. Fuchs' works include mystical-religious and erotic subjects. Apart from his graphic oeuvre, Fuchs also worked as a stage and costume designer, as well as an architect. His buildings are characterized by ornaments and colors. For instance, Fuchs renovated the Otto-Wagner-Villa in Vienna, where the Ernst-Fuchs-Museum is located today. Works by Ernst Fuchs have been exhibited worldwide and are part of major museum collections, including the National Portrait Gallery, and the Tate Gallery in London.
