Klaus Richter has painted the portrait of Maximilian Harden after a drawing he had created directly in front of the model. He reworked the painting several times, before he found the final version. With his political weekly ‘Die Zukunft’, Maximilian Harden (1861-1927) was one of the major journalists of the German Empire.
Condition:
The painting is in good condition, showing tiny white paint marks to the lower right. The paint surface shows minor abrasion and craquelure. No evidence of retouching under UV light. The frame shows chips and looses of the gilding. The dimensions are 61 x 50 cm, while the frame measures 78 x 66 cm.
Klaus Richter (1887-1948)
Klaus Richter studied philosophy and languages in Milan and Munich, before turning to painting. Then he trained in anatomical drawing with his uncle Robert Richter in Paris. Subsequently, he became a pupil of Lovis Corinth in Berlin. From 1911, he shared a studio with Magnus Zeller and exhibited at the Berlin Secession. He also worked as a writer, actor and set designer. In 1919, he took a teaching position at the School of Applied Arts in Berlin-Charlottenburg. Starting from 1922, he was a professor at the Art Academy Königsberg, and from 1927 at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts. Klaus Richter was a Chairman of the Verein Berliner Künstler up to his suspension during the Third Reich. Rudi Lesser was one of his students. (cko) Â
