Frans II Francken (1581-1642)
Frans Francken was born into a famous Flemish family of painters, active in Antwerp from the 16th to the early 18th century, whereby he is considered the most famous and talented member of the family. He first trained under his father, who was a student of Frans Floris. In 1605 Francken became a master painter. He was a member and later the dean of the Guild of St. Luke. Francken’s oeuvre comprises history paintings, genre scenes, still lifes, Kunstkammer paintings and altarpieces. Often he devoted himself to allegorical or biblical themes and executed several variants of one subject matter. Francken is most celebrated for his introduction of new and unusual themes to Flemish painting. Paintings by the artist are found in many prestigious museum collections, e.g. in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, the Musée du Louvre in Paris, as well as the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Royal Collection in London.
