Alfred Hrdlicka (1928-2009

Alfred Hrdlicka was born in Vienna in 1928. From 1946 to 1952, he studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste under Albert Paris von Gütersloh and Josef Dobrowski and later with the sculptor Fritz Wotruba. After his first exhibition ‘Sculpture, Painting and Prints’ at the Viennese Zedlitzhalle, he received international notoriety in 1964, when he represented Austria at the 32nd Venice Biennial along with Herbert Boeckl. From 1970 to 1989, he was a professor at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Stuttgart, at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg, at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin, as well as the Universität für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna. His figurative and expressionistic works are some of the most important works of contemporary Austrian art. (cko)
