Item Details
Description
Late Period, 664-332 BC. A carved hardstone Menat amulet. 0.55 grams, 12mm (1/2"). From an early 20th century collection. The Menat amulet was a counterpoise that was worn at the back of a heavy collar necklace to stop it from slipping down the neck. They are either shown as plain in form, as in this example, or more often with an image of the goddess Hathor to whom they were sacred. They symbolise harmony and balance, and had a fertility role owing to their connection with Hathor, goddess of love. [No Reserve]
