Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. An incredible bowl of clear blown glass with a slight iridescent patina. The body of the bowl, with a very slightly folded rim, sits atop a beautiful convex base. The foot is round, slightly flaring, and hollow. This was made using the technique that revolutionized an industry in ancient Rome, taking it from a small, specialized production limited to a few small areas to a huge consumer technology in the mid-first century CE. Where items would once have been made of pottery, suddenly they were made of glass, which became omnipresent in Roman life. This is a particularly fine, large, well-preserved example. Size: 6.5" W x 3.45" H (16.5 cm x 8.8 cm)
