A large Late Roman bluish-green glass bowl
Rhineland, circa 4th-5th Century A.D.
The deep footed bowl, straight-sided with wrythen moulded ribs on the lower section, the thickened rim with thin applied trail below, set on a tubular base-ring, 15.5cm diam., 13.3cm high

In shape and decoration this bowl belongs to Morin-Jean's Form 100, taken from a footed bowl in greenish glass with moulded spiral ribbing found in 1870 at Vieil-Atre, now preserved in the Musée de Boulogne-sur-Mer (inv. no.2636) but for which there is no further information (Morin-Jean, La verrerie en Gaule sous l'empire romain, Paris 1913, pp.135, 136, fig.180).
Another light bluish-green deep bowl and dated to the 4th Century is preserved in the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto, although there are no details of is find-place (inv. no. 961x8.47; John W. Hayes; Roman and Pre-Roman Glass in the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto 1975, p.120, no.472, fig.12).
