Description
Rome, ca. 100 to 300 CE. This piece is a shallow bowl, or a patera in Latin, that would most likely have been used for drinking. Despite the cracking, this bowl reamins quite beautiful and carries a stunning rainbow iridescence from burial. The bowl is perfectly formed with no foot and almost no evidence of the rim having been rolled. Glassmakers in the Levant during the early first century BCE invented the technique of blowing glass through a hollow tube to inflate it; this technology came to Rome with the annexation of that area in 64 BCE. Glass blowing allowed the mass production of glassware throughout the Roman area of influence and it rapidly replaced pottery in the household. Size: 2" x 6" at widest diameter.
