Item Details
Description
One of a pair, this finely crafted anthropomorphic with scepter is possibly representative of the Ming Dynasty (1368 to 1644 ce) or the early Qing Dynasty (1644 to 1912 ce). The sculpture is 5-1/4 inches tall, 2-3/4 inches wide, and 4- 3/4 inches deep. This Chinese mythical hybrid creature is considered to be a very powerful protector to practitioners of Feng Shui. It resembles a winged lion. Pixiu is an earth and sea variation, particularly an influential and auspicious creature for wealth with voracious appetite towards gold and silver. Therefore, traditionally to the Chinese, Pixiu has always been regarded as an auspicious creature that possessed mystical power capable of drawing wealth from all directions.
Condition
The nephrite exhibits surface alteration from age and lustrous waxy patina from professional restoration. The sculpture is sound. From a private collection, this artifact is clean, however will be sold without further restoration (as is).
