Description
HENRY LEE
(1756-1818) American patriot who served as the ninth Governor of Virginia and as the Virginia Representative to Congress. During the Revolution, Lee served as a cavalry officer in the Continental Army and earned the nickname "Light-Horse Harry". Manuscript D.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., [Virginia], Oct. 2, 1792, by Revolutionary War soldier Samuel Coleman, awarding another soldier a land grant in recognition of his service, in full: "Robert Winston is entitled to the proportion of land allowed a private of the Virginia State line for three years service..." The note is signed by Coleman at the conclusion by Coleman, and then boldly countersigned by Lee, who at this time was Governor of Virginia, at the bottom. The document has been laid down on a slightly larger sheet of paperboard, else very good. Also present is an excised frontispiece portrait of Lee, with his facsimile signature.
