Sirani Elizabeth, daughter of John Andrea, Bolognese painter and pupil of Guido Reni, was born in Bologna, where she learned, together with her sisters, the first rudiments of painting, in an environment such as art, considered a male prerogative and poorly tolerated the presence of young women.
