Description

American Classical Mahogany Box Sofa, ca. 1825, New York, the shaped crest rail with a figural panel, the closed arms fronted by tapering columns on turned legs with melon feet, executed in carefully selected figural veneers, h. 31", w. 80", d. 27-1/2".

Condition

In overall very good condition. The piece appears to have been recently lightly polished. It exhibits minor wear, shrinkage and normal indications of age and use. Tight and solid. New upholstery. There is a filled veneer loss on the vertical surface of the top of the arm support. The filled area is about 1-1/2" in diameter. The corresponding element on the other arm has smaller repaired veneer chips at its top and bottom edges. There is some filler at the top, outside edge of one front foot. The casters are later replacements; one rear one does not match.
