Description
circa 1825, leaf carved and gadrooned back with turned rosettes, deeply scrolled leaf carved arms and seat rail with eagle's head feet with wing returns, fully carved rear feet, silk upholstery, 32-1/4 x 89 x 23-1/2 in.
Note:
Illustrated and discussed in The Magazine Antiques, October 1931, pg. 208-209. The article describes that by tradition, the sofa is one of an original suite of four originally made for the Senate chamber of the Capital at Washington. When it was no longer in use, it is thought to have been moved to the Sun Tavern in Alexandria.
Condition
very good overall with minor cracks at arm supports, scattered wear and some minor chips at corners, visible upholstery frame with later/replaced bracing, not fully examined under upholstery, stained and torn
