Description
Classical World, Etruria, ca. early 6th century CE. A tall oinochoe, a pouring vessel, in the glossy black style of Bucchero ware. It has a low, flat foot with a slight roll, and a strap handle rising from shoulder to pour down into the broad, wavy rim. Incised decorations go all around the body, with slight rolls at neck and shoulder. Items like these were wheel-made, with a foot that was thrown separately on the wheel and joined to the rest of the vase as the two pieces began to harden. It was then burnished with a smooth stone to give it a sheen, before being put into a reduced-oxygen kiln to produce this glossy black color from the iron-oxide rich Tuscan clay. Size: 8.25" W x 10.8" H (21 cm x 27.4 cm)
