Item Details
Description
Classical World, Italy, Etruria, Etruscan culture, ca. 768 to 264 BCE. A wheel-thrown Bucchero drinking vessel known as a kantharos presenting an elegant form with a broad body resting atop a squat foot. A decorative, segmented band courses around the lower body and is interrupted only by the lower terminals of the arching handles, and the entire vessel is enveloped in lustrous jet-black glaze characteristic of fine Bucchero ware vessels. The kantharos form can be traced as far back as the 8th century BCE, and in later times kantharoi were prominently featured as subjects on black- and red-figure vases, often carried by Bacchus (Greek Dionysus) or Hercules (Greek Herakles). Size: 6.75" in diameter x 4.5" H (17.1 cm x 11.4 cm)

Provenance: private J. P. collection, Rye, Colorado, USA; ex-Bill Buffinger collection, Hollywood, California, USA, 2000s
