Description
ORNATE SHOE BUCKLES ATTRIBUTED TO GENERAL FRIEDRICH WILHELM VON STEUBEN
A pair of large and very ornate late 18th century shoe buckles believed to have been owned and worn by Gen. Wilhelm Friedrich von Steuben. The buckles, 3" long and 2 1/2" wide, are set throughout with multi-faceted cut glass faux "diamonds" set side-by side with blue glass "sapphires" between. The stones are mounted atop silver metal frames which have two forked prongs on each. The buckles are set into a period padded wood case with two brass hooks. These relics were purchased at an auction of part of the estate of Mina von Steuben, a descendant of the general who lived in eastern Pennsylvania. Also included are some genealogical research notes in the hand of Ms. von Steuben and a clipping, obtained with the shoe buckles at the same time. Additional genealogical research and original and copy of letters of provenance are also included.
