Item Details
Description
A Greek marble face, likely of a goddess, from a statue, c. 4th – 3rd Century BC, the features nicely modeled in classical style. At times, due to lack of marble or other stone, images of gods, full statues or busts, may have been fashioned of another material such as plaster, and given a marble face, such as the example presented here. It is thought that the hole on the back of the face was used to hang these types of head up on the wall, though it may have also simply been used to join the face to the rest of the sculpture. H: 6 1/8 in (15.5cm), W: 5 in (12.7cm). Light deposits and mounted on custom base. Ex collection of William Major Tedder.
