Description
Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Nicoya region, ca. 200 to 600 CE. A superb jade axe god pendant carved in low relief from a stunning polished stone of white and grey hues, depicting an anthropomorphic figure with abstract, string cut features delineating a parted coiffure, decorative headband, stylized facial features, and joined hands meeting across the chest. The name "axe god" comes from the celt-like form of the pendant, which is laterally perforated just above the shoulders. A beautiful example from the ancients of Costa Rica.
