Description
Robert E. Lee and Mary Custis Lee: Presentation Portraits from Mrs. Lee Matching portraits of Robert E. Lee and his wife, Mary Custis Lee. They each measure 15 1/2" x 20" and are mounted on board. We believe they are enlarged photographs which have been highlighted with charcoal and pastel chalk. Mrs. Lee has signed each one. Her portrait is inscribed by her below the portrait: "Mary Custis Lee". Robert E. Lee's portrait is inscribed by her in like manner: "A Memento picture of Gen. R E Lee for my little friend Allan Lewis with the love of Mary Custis Lee". Each portrait exhibits some edge chipping and border tears. After the war, Mary Custis Lee was deluged with requests for souvenir portraits of her illustrious husband and typically provided CDV portraits which she hand-colored herself and signed. Obviously, she had a soft spot in her heart for young Allan Lewis and went above-and-beyond with this gift - the only examples of their kind we have encountered. It is quite likely she hand-colored these, as well.
