Item Details
Description
Civil War Period Homespun Woolen Bed Sheet as Fabricated by the Women of Boalsburg, Pennsylvania for Donation to the U.S. Sanitary Commission and Use in Civil War Hospitals.
72" X 82" with two edges folded and stitched. Fine quality, rather thin, homespun, off white wool. Overall about perfect, sound condition. Acquired from the 92 year old granddaughter of the woman who aided in its fabrication during the war. It was common for civilians to roll bandages, fabricate bed 'sheets', and provide other materials for use by soldiers housed in hospitals, this being a good example. Boalsburg, PA has the distinction of laying claim to being the first town to celebrate Memorial Day when several women made a pilgrimage to the local cemetery to place flowers on the graves of their relatives and other Civil War soldiers who were buried there, in 1864. Very scarce as most of these pieces were either worn out or simply discarded.
