Description
Explorer Henry Morton Stanley: Collection of Confederate Artifacts. Purchased by the consignor from a Christie's sale in 2002, this group of relics was part of an African sale of his collection. The lot as described at that time was said to have been purchased by Stanley during an 1890-91 lecture tour in the United States. Henry Morton Stanley's interest in these items could have been because they reminded him of his enlistment in the 6th Arkansas regiment where he spent 10 months of service with the Confederate forces. Stanley was captured at the Battle of Shiloh at the age of 2, ending his time as a soldier.
The collection consists of: 1) 23 Confederate dollar bills, 2) three belt plates, two union and one CSA, 3) seven brass uniform buttons, 4) three musket balls and a collection of lead bullets. A tag accompanies the group and reads "Souvenir 1890 C. M. Bradt & Co. War Relics from Southern Battlefields," along with a note signed "Yours Faithfully Henry Stanley London Oct 13th 1898."
